Expert Talk: Career Perspectives in Research Management (Postdoc Appreciation Week)

Overview

While research management professionals play a crucial role in enabling excellent research, the profession itself often remains insufficiently visible and underrecognized. This expert session aims to raise awareness of research management as a distinct and evolving career field and to highlight current efforts to strengthen its professional recognition in Austria and across Europe.

The session will begin with an introductory presentation providing an overview of research management as a profession. Topics will include the growing visibility of research management, competency frameworks such as RM Comp, professional development opportunities including the EARMA Academy and related initiatives, as well as Austrian activities within the framework of the European Research Area (ERA). The presentation will also explore why these developments are particularly relevant for postdoctoral researchers considering alternative career paths.

The introduction will be followed by a panel discussion on Research Management as a Profession, featuring professionals from different areas of the field. Participants will gain insights into the diverse roles and responsibilities within research management, including:

• Pre-Award Management
• Post-Award Management
• Transfer and Innovation Management
• Research Data Management and Data Stewardship
• Compliance, including Research Ethics

The discussion will provide a realistic perspective on day-to-day work in these areas, highlight transferable skills from academic careers, and address competencies that may be valuable to develop for a successful transition into research management. Ample time will be reserved for questions, discussion, and exchange with the panelists.
