Program

To move your research career forward, you need to secure funding. Success rates of 20% or less, though, can be a discouraging reminder that it takes more than a good idea to get the funding you need.

Overview

In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn what reviewers and panels expect to see in research proposals, why understanding the details and realities of the review process is so critical for shaping a good proposal, and why even great proposals get rejected.

You’ll leave this workshop with detailed examples of how to draft compelling proposal sections, a checklist and timeline for completing your proposal before the deadline that focuses your effort and limited time on essential aspects of your application, as well as understanding of where good researchers go wrong in writing proposals and how to give yourself the best possible chance of success.

The Expert

Marc Abernathy brings a unique blend of professional expertise and personal insights to the challenges and rewards of an academic career. For over 15 years, he has worked individually and in small groups with researchers to develop high-stakes journal manuscripts and successful grant applications. In addition to working as a professional coach and research communication expert, he also knows the sometimes grueling behind-the-scenes reality of academia as the husband of a researcher. This unique “outsider-insider” perspective combines broad experience with researchers from many disciplines with an honest and critical view of research life. The focus of his work is on helping researchers articulate their value to editors, peer reviewers, funders, and hiring committees. With an empathetic yet distanced understanding of the immense effort required for a research career, including the personal sacrifices and rewards, Marc designs training programs that help researchers balance passion with resilience so that they can continually transition and thrive in the hypercompetitive academic world.
